Here’s a postcard from Australia! Today I’m featuring one of the most well-known cities in the country – Melbourne! Melbourne, which is usually pronounced by the locals as “MEL-bun”, can be found right by the southern coast of the state of Victoria, which is on Australia’s eastern side. The first settlement in Melbourne was founded in 1835; the one who actually bought the land that holds present-day Melbourne was a guy named John Batman. That purchase is known as Batman’s Treaty. Just thought I’d throw out there that Batman played a huge role in the creation of Melbourne (hehe). Thanks to the Victorian gold rush a couple decades later, the city began booming in both population and finances. Today, it’s considered one of the most thriving and liveable cities in the world. Melbourne is hugely known for its incredible street art (accompanied by tours often led by the artists themselves), its immense music scene, its coffee, and its status as both cultural and sports capital of Australia. I definitely get a very laidback vibe from this city, just based on the research I’ve been doing. Of course, with Melbourne being so close to the coast, there are beaches and piers (like that at St. Kilda) full of contemporary endeavors to explore. Melbourne also offers an exceptional variety of culinary experiences – if you’re looking for sushi, pizza, Korean cuisine, or lamington jaffles (which are a type of cake made in Australia), you’ll find it here. And last but not least… look at this place! It’s absolutely beautiful! As a lover of urban beauty, this place certainly gets my upvote. Thank you so much for sending me this amazing postcard, Dhinie, and of course for all your continued kindness! Now if I could only convince people to start calling this place the Batcave…
