Here is a postcard I received from Indonesia! This is a card showing the Vesak (or Waisak) Festival at Borobudur. Borobudur is a Buddhist temple located in Magelang, Central Java, and it’s the largest of its kind in the world. I can attest to its massiveness myself as I’ve been there! It’s a multi-layered temple with many Buddha statues set up throughout, all housed in what’s called a stupa. This is basically a shell with kind of a checkerboard pattern of openings where you can peer through and see the statues. Visiting Borobudur was REALLY cool! Anyway, this festival takes place in May (this year it’ll be May 18th), and it’s a celebration of the life, death and enlightenment of Buddha. Buddhist monks will travel to the temple to leave offerings – normally things like flowers. Last year’s proceedings included also letting a thousand lanterns off into the air. You can probably imagine how stunning that must have looked! This is a festival that is open for both Buddhist and non-Buddhist spectators. Thank you so much for this amazing postcard and for all your kindness, Aulina!
